Dixie’s humble beginnings

If a person wants to buy a purebred dog, that is their right. I, however, prefer to adopt rescue dogs. After I adopted Dixie, I had a chance to talk to the woman that had fostered her. It turns out that she is also the one who initially rescued Dixie.

Dixie, formerly known as Jolly, was born just in time to be a Christmas gift puppy. Some guy was sitting in a pickup truck at a convenience store, giving away free puppies. Oh, how people love the thought of giving puppies as gifts. No, thank you. A puppy is not a gift. A puppy is a total commitment and requires a ton of work. Luckily, a dog rescue volunteer ran across them and felt the same way, so she stopped and talked to the owner.

The half-truth from the owner was that Dixie’s mom was a purebred Labrador and her father was a purebred Shepherd. The owner showed the volunteer pictures of the parents. According to the rescue volunteer, the father was HUGE, well over 100 pounds.

The volunteer scooped up Dixie and her litter mate, Noel, to put an end to the free puppy giveaway. Dixie was six weeks old when she officially entered the dog rescue world.
