The great jump

This dog of mine is just a hoot.

I took her to the vet for her vaccinations, and she was stressed out (I would be too). She was panting, pulling, and acting like a crazy dog. I could not wait to get her in the confines of an exam room. My wish came true, and the vet tech called us in.

Typically, the first thing we do is weigh Dixie. All 85.5 pounds of her. I guess Dixie knew this because she made a flying leap onto the hydraulic scale. I was a bit stunned and just stood there for a few seconds. I did not even have time to react.

It is good that Dixie wanted to help with what is usually a debacle. However, the exam table/scale was three and a half feet off the ground. She seemed to like it until it moved from the elevated position to the ground. She jumped off the scale and hit the floor as fast as she got on it. I was afraid she would break the thing, hurt herself, or hurt the vet tech when she jumped off, but she didn’t. Whew! Disaster averted.

Today, I still cannot get the vision out of my head. The jump at the vet was half-hearted, leaving me to envision what she could do if she put some effort into it. I am stuck between thinking it is funny and horrified at the realization that she could hop over our fence in a heartbeat. If she can go from sitting to the top of a table in one swoop, I have no doubt she can jump the fence, which is only a few feet taller.

So that is the story of all the excitement at Dixie’s recent trip to the vet. I think I will focus on laughing about it and get over this nervous Nelly stuff. Of course, I will keep an eye on things and hope that was the last I ever see of her hopping tricks.
